Transform your kitchen with colour

One of the biggest problems with posting my projects on my website is the fact that the projects are ongoing. My clients are all residential and the projects don't have a start and end date mainly due to budget restrictions or the time it takes to source a particular item(s).   I'm happy to roll with it - dip in and out of the project as and when the client needs me but it makes it difficult to share the finished article with you.  So I've decided that I'll share my projects with you as a work in progress.

This south London client contacted me as she wanted to add colour to their home. She adores colour and is quite brave but her other half is less adventurous so she and I had to introduce him to colour using stealth!

They bought the Edwardian house with a kitchen that had shiny dark cream units, a cool blue on the walls and a blue splashback none of which really worked together!  They didn't have the budget to replace the units so I came up with the scheme that diverted the eye from them and created a wow factor.

Given that my client isn't afraid of colour I chose the beautiful Farrow and Ball colour 'Arsenic' for the walls and 'Railings' for the woodwork. I added a feature wall of one of my favourite wallpapers - Neisha Crosland's 'Maize' to which a couple of large pieces of art will shortly be added. I also included an upcycled sideboard painted in Railings along the feature wall.

For the kitchen splashback we looked at tiles but we settled for copper sheeting which the eye is drawn to rather than to the cream units.  My client bought the sheeting on eBay for an incredibly reasonable price.  It actually improves with age!

Here is the completed kitchen. If the woodwork had been white it would not have had the same impact - more 'meh' than 'ta-dah' !  I would have even painted the ceiling in Arsenic but that was a step too far for the client.  Baby steps is better - you can always paint the ceiling at a later date!
